This is an interesting overview of land trusts in municipal areas, just one of those pieces of the puzzle that may be important in our region at some point...
i'm sorry Dar, i have a board meeting at 7 and it would be pushing it... just the drive across town is 15 minutes, though Jane's is a great place to have the meeting and in future perhaps i can make it . i
i did read the article and i'm interested in the ideas of the CLT, especially as we see large tracts of land snatched up by developers. i wonder how one would compete with the mechanisms these developers have which makes it so easy for them to get this land? i wonder how urban farming can be considered inside the city boundaries since it does not fall into an existing land use? can this be put into the master plan which is underway at this point?
i will check the blog and see if these points are talked about,
Our chosen location is closed today. I accept full responsibility as I only passively left a note for Jane, rather than speaking directly to her. So much for small scale being purposeful always...
So, instead of me spending time (I do not have today) looking for a new place, (and next Tuesday being iffy as Gustav could give us all something else to think about then) I throw this out there:
what about a virtual conversation this month?
I ask that people log into the http://smallisbeautifulnola.ning.com/ site and put their thoughts down about this land trust essay we read (under the land trust discussion). I see a few questions from my point of view:
is this a strategy we could employ to keep some parcels of land away from development and in lower wealth hands?
Is this a better strategy for those areas surrounding medium cities to keep agricultural land closer to populations?
what about the idea of people only owning the improvements on land, and not the land? too radical? understandable yet? proven or disproven yet?
has anyone seen examples (besides the ones I toured in Great Barrington Mass) working?
How does this differ from an intentional community?
hope this version of our face to face can suffice; I hope next month we will find ourselves at Fair Grinds, in person..
